Privacy Policy

AskFish ("we", "us") is an iOS app for anglers: fishing spots on a map, fishing conditions, AI answers and fish ID, catch logs and a community of anglers. This policy explains what we collect when you use AskFish, why, who handles it for us, and how you can manage and delete it.
1. What we collect
Account: the email and password you sign up with. The password is stored encrypted by our sign-in provider; we never see it. You can also set a username and an avatar.
Location: with your permission, your device's precise location, used to show spots near you on the map, get local weather and tides, and tag a catch or post with a place. Posts keep and show a place to about 1 km (unless you link the post to a specific spot); our server rounds post coordinates to that precision. The places in your catch log are visible only to you. You can turn location off at any time in iOS Settings and still pick places by hand.
Photos, camera and microphone: we only read photos you take or choose, to identify fish, log catches, share posts, set your avatar and send in messages. The microphone is used only while you record a voice message. Before a video is uploaded, we remove its metadata, such as where it was filmed.
What you create: catch logs (species, size, weight, place, time, photos and notes), saved spots, posts, comments, likes, follows and friends, and direct messages (text, photos, voice and stickers).
Friends and status: whether you are online and when you were last active, shown only to your friends.
Inviting anglers: when you enter an invite code, we record the link between your account and the inviter's, and an anonymous number for this phone (a hash of a random id the app keeps in the Keychain, not the advertising identifier), used only so one phone cannot collect invite rewards twice. Both are deleted with your account.
Push notifications: once you allow notifications, we keep this device's push token (created by Apple), your app language and the kinds of notification you want, and use them only to tell you that someone liked, commented on or answered your post, sent or accepted a friend request, or messaged you, or that AskFish answered your question. The token is deleted when you sign out or delete your account.
Conversations with AskFish: your questions, the photos you add, and the preferences AskFish remembers to answer better ("account memory", which you can review and delete in Settings).
Purchases and benefits: your Tide Pass status, your Tide Amber balance and its history. Payments are handled by Apple; we never receive your card or other payment details.
Usage and device: level, XP, cosmetics, stickers, achievements and lesson progress, how much computing each AskFish answer used, plus the basic technical data the service needs to run (app version, request times, error logs). We do not use the advertising identifier and do not track you across apps or websites.
2. How we use it
We use your information only to provide and improve AskFish; to keep your account in sync across your devices; to keep accounts and the community safe and prevent abuse; to answer your feedback and requests; and to meet legal obligations. We do not sell your personal information or use or share it for advertising.
To keep the community safe, posts, comments, message text, usernames and bios are checked automatically against a list of banned words, and content containing them can't be posted. When you report something, we receive the reported content and your account so we can review it; content reported by several people is hidden until we review it. We remove content and limit or suspend accounts that break the Terms of Use.
3. Services we use and what we share
To run the app, we pass the information each feature needs to these providers, who may use it only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase (United States): sign-in, database and file storage.
- xAI: AskFish's answers, photo analysis and species lookups are generated by xAI's Grok models. Only after you agree in the app, we send xAI what each answer needs: your question, the photos and notes you add, earlier messages in that chat, preferences from account memory, place names (not your exact coordinates), short summaries of your catch log and titles of public posts nearby. Your email, password and account ID are never sent to xAI. You can withdraw your agreement in Settings › AskFish.
- Mapbox: shows the map, looks up place names and runs searches. It receives the area you view, your searches and, for place names, a position rounded to about 100 m. The Mapbox SDK also collects anonymous usage and location data to improve its maps; you can turn that off with the ⓘ button on the map. Mapbox handles this data under the Mapbox Product Terms, the Mapbox Data Processing Addendum and the Mapbox Privacy Policy.
- Apple: Apple Maps and place search, and in-app purchases and subscriptions. If you ask Apple for a refund, we may tell Apple how the purchase was used (for example, whether the Tide Amber bought was spent) so Apple can decide on the refund. Notifications reach your device through the Apple Push Notification service, which receives each notification's title and text (for example the sender's username and the first words of a comment or message).
- Open-Meteo: weather and marine conditions. Requests go through our server, so Open-Meteo receives only the coordinates of the place you look up, rounded to about 1 km, and nothing about your account.
- OpenStreetMap community servers (overpass-api.de and overpass.kumi.systems): public fishing-spot data. They receive the area searched, rounded to about 1 km, and your IP address.
- Alerts to the operator: when you report content, or a purchase can't be credited, a short notice goes to the operator through an email or team-messaging service.
Posts, comments, your username, avatar, level and cosmetics are visible to other signed-in users; photos and videos in posts are stored at unlisted links that anyone with the link can open. Direct messages (including photos and voice) are visible only to the two people in the conversation, and catch photos only to you. Beyond these cases and what the law requires, we do not give your personal information to third parties.
4. Where and how long we keep it
Our servers are in the United States, and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. If you live outside the United States, your information is transferred there. We require providers to protect it with appropriate safeguards.
We keep your information while your account exists. When you delete content or your account, the related information is deleted from our servers, except transaction records we must keep by law.
5. Your choices and rights
You can change your username and avatar under Me; delete your posts, comments and catches; review and delete account memory in Settings; turn off location, camera, photos and microphone access in iOS Settings; withdraw your agreement to share content with xAI in Settings › AskFish; turn notifications, or one kind of them, off in Settings › Notifications or in iOS Settings; and delete your account at any time.
You can also email us to ask what personal information we hold about you, or to have it corrected, exported or deleted. We answer within 30 days.
United States: we do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. AskFish does not track you across third-party sites or apps, so it does not respond differently to browsers' Do Not Track signals.
Canada (including Quebec): you may withdraw consent, access and correct your information, and complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec. The person in charge of protecting personal information is the operator named below.
6. Deleting your account
You can delete your account in Settings › Account & security › Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, profile and avatar, catches, saved spots, posts, comments, likes, follows and friends, direct messages, conversations with AskFish and its memory, level, cosmetics, stickers and Tide Amber balance. It cannot be undone.
Deleting your account does not cancel an auto-renewing purchase made through Apple; cancel it in iPhone Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions.
7. Children
AskFish is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use AskFish with the permission of a parent or guardian. If we learn that we collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it right away.
8. Security
We protect your information with encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls and per-account data permissions. No safeguard is perfect; if a security incident affects you, we will notify you as the law requires.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version; if we make significant changes, we will let you know in the app before they take effect.
